Gaggenau Dishwasher Not Draining

Standing water in the base of a Gaggenau dishwasher means the drain cycle failed. The causes run from a clogged filter to a jammed pump. Here is how to work through them.

When a Gaggenau dishwasher finishes with water still standing in the base, or throws a drain-related error, the drain cycle did not move the water out. On these machines, as on their Bosch-family siblings, the drain path is a filter, a sump, a hose, and a pump, and a blockage at any point stops the water. Most causes are at the easy end of that path.

Follow the Water Out

Begin at the filter in the base of the tub, the most common blockage and the easiest to clear. Below it the sump can hold debris, glass, or a lost seed or pit that never made it to the pump. The drain hose behind the machine can kink or clog, and the sink connection, the air gap or a new disposer knockout, can block the discharge. The drain pump itself can jam on a hard object.

A new disposer is a classic cause. If the dishwasher stopped draining right after a garbage disposer was installed, the disposer's drain knockout plug may not have been removed. It blocks the dishwasher discharge and is a quick fix.

When to Call

If the filter, hose, sump, and sink connection are clear and it still will not drain, the pump or a control fault needs testing. Our Gaggenau maintenance guide covers filter care that prevents this, and our oven error-code guide covers Gaggenau ovens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is There Standing Water in My Gaggenau Dishwasher?
The drain cycle could not clear the water, usually because of a clogged filter, a blocked sump or drain hose, a jammed pump, or a blocked sink connection. Cleaning the filter and clearing the drain path resolves most cases; a pump fault needs a technician.
How Do I Drain a Gaggenau Dishwasher Manually?
Remove the filter in the base and scoop or sponge out the standing water so you can inspect the sump. Then check the drain hose and the sink connection for blockages. Clearing the obstruction usually restores normal draining; if water returns each cycle, the pump needs testing.
Why Did My Gaggenau Stop Draining After a Plumbing Job?
A very common cause is a new garbage disposer whose drain knockout plug was not removed, which blocks the dishwasher's discharge. Checking and clearing the disposer connection or the air gap often restores draining immediately after a plumbing change.
