A Thermador Freedom column that is drifting warm is almost always a cooling-delivery problem rather than a failed compressor. The condenser, the evaporator fan that pushes cold air into the compartment, and the defrost system that keeps the coil clear are the usual suspects, and each shows itself a little differently.
Airflow First
Columns are tall, and even cooling depends on air moving freely. A condenser choked with dust cannot reject heat, and blocked interior vents, often from overpacking, stop cold air from reaching the top or bottom of the compartment. Cleaning the condenser and clearing the vents is the right first pass and fixes a surprising number of warm-column calls.
Fan and Defrost
If airflow is clear and the unit still warms, the evaporator fan may be failing, so cold air is generated but not delivered, or a defrost fault may be icing the coil until it can no longer cool. A sensor reading wrong can also make the control run the system incorrectly. These need a meter to confirm.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What We Do |
|---|---|---|
| Whole column slowly warming | Dust-clogged condenser | Clean condenser, verify heat rejection |
| Top or bottom warmer than middle | Blocked vents or weak fan | Clear vents, test evaporator fan |
| Frost on the back panel | Defrost fault | Test defrost heater and sensor |
| Runs constantly, still warm | Airflow, fan, or seal | Check gasket, airflow, and fan |
| Temperature alarm | Sensor or airflow | Read data, verify sensor |
When to Call
If the condenser is clean, vents are clear, and it still warms, testing the fan, defrost system, and sensors calls for a technician. Our Thermador maintenance guide covers prevention, and our F-code guide covers Thermador ovens.
