A Scotsman that has stopped making ice is frustrating, but on a residential machine the causes follow a predictable order. Scale from Boulder's hard water is at the top of the list, followed by the water supply and filter, and then airflow at the condenser. Only after those are ruled out do we look at the water system and sensors. A full cleaning is often both the diagnosis and the cure.
Scale and Water First
Scotsman machines are more sensitive to water quality than almost anything else in the kitchen. Scale on the evaporator slows or stops ice formation and harvest, and a spent filter passes still more scale into the machine. The first move is a full clean-and-descale cycle with a fresh filter, which restores production in a large share of no-ice cases.
Airflow and the System
An air-cooled Scotsman rejects heat through a condenser, and if its vents are clogged the machine cannot make ice efficiently and may stop. Confirm the water supply is open and the filter is fresh. If the machine is clean, has water, and has airflow but still will not produce, the water system, harvest components, or a sensor need a technician.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What We Do |
|---|---|---|
| Low then no production | Scale on evaporator | Full clean and descale, fresh filter |
| No water entering | Supply, filter, or valve | Check supply, change filter, test valve |
| Makes ice slowly, warm machine | Blocked condenser airflow | Clean condenser vents |
| Ice will not harvest | Harvest component or scale | Descale, test harvest system |
| Bin full sensed incorrectly | Bin sensor fault | Test and correct the sensor |
When to Call
If the machine is clean, has water and airflow, and still will not make ice, the water system or a sensor needs a technician. Our cleaning guide walks through the routine, and our maintenance guide covers keeping production up.
