Sub-Zero Ice Maker Not Working

When a built-in Sub-Zero stops making ice, the cause is almost always upstream of the ice maker itself: water supply, filter, inlet valve, or the module. Here is how to narrow it down.

A Sub-Zero ice maker that has stopped is frustrating, but the fault is usually simple and upstream. Before anyone replaces an ice-maker module, the water path has to be ruled out: the supply, the filter, and the inlet valve that fills the mold. On built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration those are the parts that quietly fail first.

Follow the Water

Ice starts with water reaching the mold. A closed or kinked supply line, an overdue water filter, or an inlet valve that is not opening all produce the same result: no fill, no ice. Front Range water is moderately hard, so scale builds on the valve and can keep it from opening fully. Changing an old filter and confirming the supply is the right first move.

The Ice Maker Itself

If water is reaching the mold but ice still is not forming or ejecting, attention turns to the module: the thermostat or sensor that triggers harvest, the ejector, and the mold heater. On built-in units the compartment also has to be cold enough to freeze the mold, so a refrigeration issue can masquerade as an ice-maker fault.

SymptomLikely CauseWhat We Do
No water reaching the moldSupply, filter, or inlet valveCheck supply, change filter, test valve
Water fills but no iceCompartment not cold enoughVerify freezer temperature and airflow
Ice forms but will not ejectModule or ejector faultTest the module, replace as needed
Small or hollow cubesWeak fill or low water pressureCheck valve, pressure, and filter
Ice smells or tastes offOld filter or stale iceReplace filter, clear old ice
Change the filter before replacing parts. A large share of no-ice calls trace to an overdue water filter or a scaled inlet valve. A fresh filter and a valve test are cheaper and faster than an ice-maker module, so we check them first.

When to Call

If the supply is open, the filter is fresh, and ice still will not form, testing the inlet valve, module, and freezer temperature calls for a technician. See our not-cooling guide if the compartment is also warm, and our maintenance guide to keep the ice system healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Did My Sub-Zero Ice Maker Stop Making Ice?
Most often the water path: a closed or kinked supply line, an overdue filter, or an inlet valve that is scaled and not opening. If water is reaching the mold but ice still will not form, the freezer may not be cold enough or the module needs testing.
Can a Water Filter Cause No Ice?
Yes. An overdue filter restricts flow, so the mold does not fill enough to form full cubes, and eventually no ice at all. Changing the filter is the first thing to try, and in Boulder's hard water it also protects the inlet valve from scale.
Why Is My Sub-Zero Making Small or Hollow Ice?
That usually means weak fill, from low water pressure, a partly clogged filter, or an inlet valve that is not opening fully. Checking the filter and water pressure comes first; if the fill is good, the valve or module needs a closer look.
