The Short Answer
Most no-ice calls come down to water not arriving in the right amount at the right time. A water inlet valve that will not open, a supply line frozen where it runs cold, a filter clogged with sediment, or the harvest module failing to cycle will all leave you with an empty bin. Boulder's hard water adds a slower failure: scale builds on the evaporator plate until cubes turn small, hollow, and cloudy.
Most Common Causes
- Failed water inlet valve. The single most common cause of a machine that fills with nothing.
- Frozen or kinked supply line. Ice or a pinch in the tubing blocks the fill.
- Clogged filter. A neglected filter starves the fill and slows harvests.
- Stalled harvest module. The ejector or its thermostat stops cycling.
- Scaled evaporator. Hard-water buildup shrinks cubes and slows output.
Notes by Brand
The water path is similar across machines, but the details differ. On Sub-Zero built-in ice makers, the fill valve and the module are the usual suspects, and we descale as part of the repair. On Scotsman standalone clear-ice machines, the water pump and distribution tube foul with scale, so cleaning restores harvest quality. On Thermador and True Residential units, we verify fill volume and the harvest thermostat. On refrigerator ice makers from Monogram and KitchenAid, a frozen fill tube is common in a cold garage or basement install.
Symptom Reference
| What You See | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No ice, no fill | Failed valve or frozen line | Test valve, thaw line, verify supply pressure |
| Small or hollow cubes | Low fill or scaled plate | Descale, correct fill volume, replace filter |
| Bin frozen into a block | Leaking valve dribbling water | Replace valve, test module |
| Slow production | Scale or weak pump | Descale, test and replace pump if needed |
| Cloudy ice | Scale on evaporator or dirty machine | Full descale and clean, fresh filter |
