Why Won't My Burner Ignite?

A burner that clicks without lighting is almost always a spark or gas-flow problem, not a dead range. Here is what stops ignition across the brands we service in Boulder, and how we get the flame back.

The Short Answer

Ignition needs three things: a clean spark, gas at the burner, and a cap that seats correctly so the two meet. Most no-light burners fail on the first: spillover fouls the igniter electrode so the spark cannot jump cleanly, and the burner clicks and clicks without catching. A cap knocked out of alignment during cleaning, a weak spark module, or a spark switch shorted by moisture are the other usual causes. A true gas-supply problem is less common but is what we rule out first for safety.

Most Common Causes

  • Fouled igniter. Food and cleaner on the electrode weaken or block the spark.
  • Crooked burner cap. A cap seated off-center puts the spark out of reach of the gas.
  • Moisture in the switch. A spark switch shorted by spillover fires every igniter at once.
  • Weak spark module. The ignition module no longer delivers a strong, consistent spark.
  • Blocked burner port. Debris in the port starves the flame even with good spark.

Notes by Brand

On Wolf and Viking sealed-burner ranges, cleaning and aligning the igniter and cap resolves most no-light complaints, and we test the spark module when it does not. On Thermador and Gaggenau cooktops, the spark switch and igniter are the common failures. On La Cornue ranges, we work symptom to cause and verify gas flow and spark at each burner. On Dacor and Bosch cooking equipment, a shorted spark switch behind the knob is a frequent cause of constant clicking.

Gas safety. If a burner does not light after a couple of clicks, stop and let the area air out, and never leave gas flowing to an unlit burner. If you smell a strong gas odor, shut off the range and call your gas utility before service.

FAQ

Why Does My Burner Click but Not Light?
A clicking burner has spark but no flame, which usually means the igniter is fouled by spillover, the burner cap is seated crooked, or the gas is not reaching the burner. We clean and align the igniter and cap first, then verify spark and gas flow so it lights on the first click.
All My Burners Click at Once. What Is Wrong?
When every burner clicks together, the spark switch is usually shorted by moisture or spillover, so the control keeps firing all the igniters. Drying and resealing the switch area, or replacing a pitted switch, stops the constant clicking.
Is It Safe to Keep Trying to Light a Burner?
If a burner clicks without lighting, stop after a couple of tries so gas does not build up, and ventilate the area. If you smell a strong gas odor, shut off the range and book service. We check for leaks as part of every ignition repair.
